Nias Island / Tello Island - Indonesia
Pulau Nias is an island which lies off the western coast of Sumatra.
The earthquake that struck in
March, 2005 caused much damage & destruction to the island’s infrastructure.
Nias has recovered from the disaster, and is an amazing place to visit, as well as home to some incredible waves.
Pulau Pulau Batu (AKA Kepulauan Batu or the Tello Islands), a group of 101 islands just south
of Nias.
Tello Island also has some good waves. TroppoDoc Base is on Pulau Tello (unmarked island between Pulau Nias &
Pulau Siberut). Dr Derek Allen & Volunteers stay on Tello Island, sometimes travelling to smaller surrounding islands for day clinics and staying overnight.
TroppoDoc also do clinics on Nias Island, staying for one or two nights at Sorake Beach.
Best route to Tello Island:
Volunteers fly to Medan via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
Erik Brandt will meet & greet you in Medan, take you to your hotel, and put you on the next direct flight to Tello Island or to Gunung Sitoli (Nias Island) where Dr Allen will meet you.
However,
owever, it could be cheaper to fly to Singapore – catch ferry to Batam, and fly Batam to Medan -
accomodation & internal air travel is much cheaper when purchased in Indonesia ( via Erik Brandt).
Suggest you book return flight to Singapore and make other arrangements closer to date of travel, with Volunteer Co-ordinator - unless you find a cheap flight direct to Medan.
