August 9

Added to site: Sep 20 at 2:36a.m.
Tuesday 9th August - We hold a brief morning clinic at Sangalai Village starting at 8am and seeing 14 patients. We say good bye to Dave and Lynn and also to Tessa and Alan, who have returned to this island. Finally we have enough fuel to take the boat to Akhamb Island - this takes 4 hours in a small boat which goes into the more exposed coast of Malekula. This boat costs 7,000 vatu to hire. At Akhamb Island there is a Nurse Aid looking after one thousand people with a very tidy Medical Centre and a nearby Women's Resource Centre that we were able to sleep on the floor. This is a very busy Clinic starting at 3.45pm. Again, no electricity and no running water - even though there is a water tank just outside the clinic. We have arrived on the Nurse Aid's sons' 1st birthday and there is a big celebratory birthday party involving most of the village. We are brought plenty of wonderful food from the party after we have settled into the Women's Resource Centre. The music is quite loud and goes on fairly late into the night.
