Tuesday 16th August - Freezing cold in Wellington - time with Melioni and Tessa.
Wednesday 17th August - Go and meet with the Indonesian Ambasador, Pak Sriyono, to discuss the process of trying to drop the charges on me held in Indonesia, for flying illegally into Indonesia, even though the helicopter has proof it was brought to Medan by a container in 2006. He understands the situation and said he would help to resolve it. Also at this meeting he clearly says any work I do in Indonesia as a Doctor from now on, will be illegal unless I have a Social Visa. I guess this means I cannot give antibotics to a child with pneumonia, or anti-malaria medicines to a child with malaria, or indeed oral rehydration solution to a child suffering dehydration from vomiting or diarrohea. That makes it illegal to help anyone sick in front of me because of these criminal charges, which are un-supportable. It is a strange world really isn’t it? Social Visa is not possible while I have criminal charges against me. Thanks to the Bureaucrats, the poor people on Tello will have no accessible Doctor. Today, Margaret and I also go to visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to talk about the situation with curent criminal charges against me and how unhelpful the New Zealand High Commissioner appears – they were surprised that he had told me there was only two ways he could help me - (1) To give me a list of lawyers. (2) To visit me in prison. The staff I met at Foreign Affairs Office offered to assist in what ever way they could, although they thought their only form of action was to monitor the situation.
Thursday 18th August - Time to fly to Christchurch with Jetstar.
Friday 19th August - Drive from Christchurch to Hampden via Oregon Nurseries to source some seedlings.
Saturday 20th August - Up to the caravan and the trees, driving through ice and snow to re-establish the forestry base camp. However we have to wait some days for the seedlings.
Sunday 21st August - Go to the Baptist Church in North East Valley to catch up with old friends. Then lunch with the Finneys in Mosgiel, before home to Hampden via Brighton to uplift a planting spade. Today "Asia Down Under" screened the documentary made about Kim Webby volunteering with Troppodoc in Indonesia earlier in the year. Thank you Jason and Kim for a very complimentary documentary . If you get the chance, look at "TVNZ ON DEMAND , Asia Down Under August 21 2011."
Monday 22nd August - Back to the Dunedin to visit the Dental School and enquire about tooth repair for Melioni. Good to hear everyone up to the age of eighteen have free dental care, for New Zealanders. Melioni has an Indonesian passport however.
Tuesday 23rd August - Tree planting time had began, even though we were planting sometimes through snow drifts. This was Melioni’s first time on the tree farm (funding source for more work overseas free to the poor) - she took it in her stride, although a little unhappy about walking through snow drifts.
Wednesday 24th August - Planting trees in the morning, talking with the Rural New Zealand Womens Assoc. of North Otago, who kindly gave TroppoDoc a couple of donations to assist with water tanks for clean water storage in schools.
Thursday 25th - Friday 26th August - Planting trees – trees - trees on beautiful sun drenched days before driving to Christchurch and flying to Wellington.
Saturday 27th August - Leaving Melioni in Wellington, sadly (though in good hands). Flying to Auckland to catch up with Tony and Andrea and a visit to volunteer to be, Molly.
Sunday 28th August - After sorting some medicines it was time to go to the east to visit sister Stephanie and family, Noeline, Jan and John.
Monday 29th August - Call from Indonesian Ambassador that now it is important to see the Kapolda in Padang to make best use of a ‘small window of opportunity’ immediately after Idul Fitri. This may be very advantageous he feels to get the criminal charges against me dropped!!
Tuesday 30th August - Time to change tickets which were already booked to go to Africa, to stop at Singapore to allow me two weeks in Indonesia.
Wednesday 31st August - Organize medicines and medical equipment to take to Africa with me.
The picture shows Derek sorting medications late into the night.
