August 10

Wednesday 10th August - After a busy morning Clinic seeing 83 patients on Akhamb Island, we take the boat back to Lamap Beach (5hrs) and once on dry land again, we start walking and moving our boxes of medical supplies along with our luggage, up the road nearer to Lamap to avoid all the mosquitos on the beach. Unfortunately there appears to be more mosquitos on the road!!! We survive after smothering ourselves in insect repellant. We sleep the night in the Lamap Health Centre, where one wing (not the one we get to sleep in!!!) is being refurbished by the French Army. We visit some of the locals and entertain some of the local children, giving them glow bangles which are very colourful in the dark of night. The children just love them. Dinner is lovely fresh baked bread with our trusty peanut butter and a warm bottle of Tusker beer each - a real treat indeed!!! We sort through and re-pack medicines late into the night by torchlight and a small wick lantern, finally settling down for a couple of hours sleep before having to get up at 3am to get the truck back to Norsup.

The picture shows a group of children with their glow bangles outside our sleeping quarters at Lamap Hospital.
