August 11 Added to site: Sep 20 at 3:48a.m.
Thursday 11 August - After getting up at 3am, as the truck was supposedly coming to pick us up at 3.30am, it didn't arrive till nearly 4.30am!!! Why were we not surprised??!! We filled in the time by eating breakfast consisting of bread and peanut butter and also filling our water bottles from the rainwater tank, just outside our accomodation. Even though we have given away a lot of medicines and used a lot of our medical supplies, we still seem to have a lot of boxes left and these take up a fair amount of room on the back of the truck. It is a fairly quick trip back to Lakatoro, taking only 4.5hrs. Initially in the dark, people wait on the side of the road, or in their houses close to the road and shine their torches at the truck as it approaches - this is the signal to stop and pick up passengers. It is not too long before the truck is full and we can't stop for anymore passengers. The road is deeply rutted and we cross 5 rivers along the way. The drivers are very used to driving the road, having to do the "run" both ways each day. We arrive in Lakatoro about 9am. The other passengers disembark and the driver very kindly takes Claire, Margaret and myself on further to Norsup Hospital. We catch up with the staff there once again and introduce Claire to them. She is staying on at Norsup Hospital for another week helping Dr Trelly, while Margaret and I get the plane to fly to Port Vila that afternoon, to meet up with Lloyd and stay at Devils Point Road.
The picture shows some of the local children peering in the window.
